The eggs for these lunches came out horrible. (Link to a tutorial HERE.) But the girls ate the eggs and didn't mention anything about them.

Black, White and Spice in a small container, for the older girls.
Sliced cucumber
Tomato
Blackberries and blueberries
Cupcake I wrote on them with THESE markers.

Pixie eats at home with me, and she asked for the car egg so I gave this one to her.

Will I ever get caught up??? 2008 Bento

I doubt it... but here are some of the kid's latest bentos/lunches and a couple of new recipes I have tweaked...

I love this box, I think it's one of my favorites. It's a stainless steel two-tiered box. Just too cute...
What's in it? A turkey sandwich on a Hawaiian sweet roll, cheese cubes, blue corn tortilla chips, and grapes. She ate everything I packed!

Tortillas and hot dogs, cubed mozzarella, and fruit skewers... if it's on a skewer they will eat it...

Coconut Rice Bentos

Diva requested coconut rice for lunch so I was glad, I am always glad to pack leftovers. She ate every single grain of rice, and all her fruit and the egg also. (I had her teacher warm the rice, that's why it's packed separate and no fruit is on top of it)

Piglet got an egg and some fruit, she also ate some chicken and some papaya salad since she was home.

It's all fishy...

Diva's first day back at school. We went to the beach twice during spring break and I think that was her favorite so I made her this little lunch to remind her of the fun times at the beach. There is a molded fish egg, his tail got cut off, two feta stuffed beach balls (OK olives), sliced strawberries, craisins, some jello she helped me make and some cottage cheese with a Swedish fish on top, I hope they don't kick her out of school because her mom put candy in her lunch. :-)
I didn't take a picture of Piglet's lunch but I gave her an egg , applesauce and crackers in her pig bento, she had it at the doctors office.

First blogged bentos of 2008...

And here they are... nothing spectacular at all. I had hoped to pull out all the stops and do something out of this world to blog and get back into the swing of things. But, last night Piglet was not feeling well and no one got any sleep and she was a fussy clingy mama's girl. So DH got a salad as you can see...

Diva got a fish shaped egg, grape and grape tomatoes skewered with whale and fish picks, an island made of banana muffin with cream cheese frosting and a Dora yogurt, which I decided to let her try although just looking at an open container makes me a little queasy. I can't imagine all that sugar and food coloring tastes good.

Piglet's egg is a sad looking star she also has some blueberry applesauce and a mini muffin.

Lunches for 12-07 Dutch baby and veggies

Diva wanted leftover Dutch baby in her lunch. So I packed her that with some grapes, a fish shaped egg, lychee's jelly and steamed carrots and zucchini with dilled butter.
Piglet had the veggies and a star shaped egg that didn't take shape.
I love this little pig bento ... perfect size for her!

Rainbow fish bento...

Diva loves hummus, she could probably eat it just as a meal for days on end. I showed her this bento and she said "No! not that cheese! I don't like that cheese!" LOL so I took it out, it was more of a gap filler anyway.

Lunches for November 2

For the most part our lunches all contain the same thing.
This is Diva's lunch, I got this Parasite Pals for a great deal. I think it's a little on the big side but Diva wanted to use it. She's got a molded star egg, fruit salad- raspberries, apples, pineapple, mango's, salad, poppy seed dressing in the elephant container, Teddy Grahams, and the skewers have grape tomatoes, cheese and chicken fajitas meat. I also put in a fun divider for her.

Molded Eggs

I actually got the instructions to use ice cream sandwich molds as egg molds from Lunch in a Box. I have actual egg molds also and I like both, the detail on the ice cream sandwich molds is too cute however. The process is very simple and it's fast, I like to make a few at a time and keep them in the fridge for quick lunch packing or snacks.

Molding Hard Boiled Eggs

  1. Boil eggs until hard boiled. Peel off shell while hot, place hot/warm egg into the mold.
  2. If using an actual egg mold just close it up, for the ice cream sandwich molds hold the mold together with rubber bands.
  3. Place in an water and ice bath for 10 minutes. Remove from molds. I find that it is harder to remove the eggs if I am using the ice cream sandwich molds due to the details on the faces and star. So try to do this carefully.

Lunches for October 15...

I made these lunches the night before. I am liking this whole pack the lunch the night before deal. But it does mean cold lunches so I won't exclusively pack the night before.
DH's lunch is salad greens, bell peppers, and carrots with a cow boiled egg, and round slice of cheese as the "moon"- get it? "cow jumped over the moon"? Ok yeah, it's a stretch. There is also kiwi and orange slices in the bottom left corner, grapes above that and in the upper right corner I put ham and cheese slices. Underneath the egg is a container of Jane's krazy salt.

This is Diva's "Let your light shine" lunch. Same salad as DH's, a star shaped egg, raisins, kiwi, oranges, and grapes. This bento is really too big for her as far as size, but she ends up eating leftovers for a snack.

I packed part of Piglet's lunch too, ham, pig shaped egg, and grapes. I will probably give her some kiwi also.

Bento packing marathon!

ok so not really a marathon. But I packed five lunches yesterday. Two for the girls to have yesterday, one for DH today and two for the girls today. I wanted to have very little "morning of" prep time today so I did everything last night for today's lunches. This morning all I had to do was heat some water to warm the thermos, heat up some Massaman curry leftovers for dh, toss it in the thermos and put it in a bag with the rest of his lunch. Which is celery sticks with almond butter and peanut butter, babybel cheese, kiwi (which I added later) and two grape tomatoes.

Today us girls are having sausage rolls that I bought from the Happy Donut yesterday while at lunch with Shell and her little man. So in Diva's lunch I put the sausage roll, kiwi and strawberry ka-bobs, a donut hole, and some yogurt raisins. Piglet has the same foods for lunch I just prepped what I needed to and will warm up her sausage roll with mine at lunch. Incidentally I am sure you're thinking these kids eat a lot of raisins being that their mom thinks they are gross. Well, the thing about the yogurt raisins is that on Wednesday I picked Diva up from school and she goes "Mama I want some yogurt with raisins", I tried not to let her see me wrinkle my nose at the thought of raisins plumping up in yogurt *GAG* but I said "ok we can get you some." The more we talked about it though she kept saying "raisins with yogurt around them mama", so I finally asked if she saw someone eating them. She said yes her teacher had some... ahhh ok... now we're getting somewhere. So I asked her "did your teacher eat them with a spoon or with her hands?" "Her hands" OHHHH ok... yogurt COVERED raisins. Which BTW reading the nutrition information on that stuff I should have just given her M&M's, they are sooo sugary! Oh well. I hope she eats her sausage roll they are so good and handmade at this Donut place.
Yesterday, as mentioned above we had lunch with Shell and her little man. I wanted the girls to have something somewhat healthy and substantial before their donut holes so I packed them some lunches to take with. Diva ate all of her lunch and some of my fries. Piglet ate most of her lunch and some of my patty melt. Shell and I are a bit donut happy, or were at the time. It turns out we were there right before closing so they were THROWING donuts away... HELLO!? is there not a shelter or somewhere to donate these to? OY. Anyway they said half price donuts so we each got a dozen holes and a box of donuts. I really shouldn't have, but I did. What on earth will we do with all these donuts?

The girls lunches for yesterday, they split a boiled egg, string cheese, raisins, and strawberries.

Popcorn chicken to the rescue! 9-28-2007

Pretty straight forward lunch for Diva today, A star shaped egg, three mini Oreos, popcorn chicken, a finger banana and babybel cheese. She ate it all, she’s got a taste for processed foods I guess, I got the chicken as a snack for her the night before while we were out at Wal-mart, yes I know Wal-mart is evil and they treat their employees horrible and such... it's only 2 mins away. I love it when there are leftovers that can be eaten cold, no warming anything up and waiting for it to cool just pack and go, I actually got to pack this the night before. That extra 10 minutes of sleep is like a drug, I NEED it :-)

When pigs lay eggs.... 9-19-2007 lunch

I made hard boiled eggs the night before so packing this bento was very fast and easy. I warmed the frozen "star" rice and the frozen mini meatballs and let them cool while I packed the carrots, egg, fruit snacks, and Cesar dressing in a separate container. After the rice and meatballs cooled a bit I packed everything up, filled up her SIGG bottle with some water and we were ready for school.
I shaped the egg with my ice cream sandwich molds from Williams Sanoma, I found the tutorial on a Bento site called Lunch in a Box.
Diva didn't touch her rice at all, which is odd she loves rice. Oh well...
