This Immortal Heart is a book about Aphrodite and Ares. Told through Aphrodite's POV. I like Jennifer Saint's writing and have enjoyed a few of her books. I've never been academic about how I write reviews. If I enjoyed the book, it was entertaining, it flowed well, the characters weren't annoying, and I finished it without wanting to put it down; that's a win for me. This book is a 4-5 star read. I love mythology and retellings. Did I LOVE Aphrodite? Not really. She was her, and her nature made her behave and think in certain ways. I liked that her character made sense. She's the goddess of love. She's strong and loves her followers. This is a story about her, Ares, her followers, Hephestus, and the politics of the Olympian Gods. Zeus is, of course, the universal A-hole.  There really is no way to spin that one to make him any different. Ares and Hephestus, I really liked. They were true to their nature. They both had a past that shaped them and put them on different paths. Which I suspect is all of us. 
Reading as Aphrodite weaved through life and the politics of Olympian court life while staying true to her core was interesting. The story flowed well. It is not a long read. Well paced.

Mama Mantras: One of my favorite recurring moments in the book are Kira’s Mama Mantras. These simple reassurances of “yes, you’re a great parent” are threaded throughout each chapter and are easy to remember affirmations that you can do this!

 AGHHHHH What in the magical, cozy cottage core, Doctor Who, Howl's Moving Castle with Sarah Beth Durst's personal magic is the perfection of The Faraway Inn!? This book has amazing magic. Great characters. A cool story that I didn't want to stop reading about. I didn't want to put it down. Magical realms that I wanted to learn more about. I was a bit concerned it might be too young for me. MC being 16 . I thought I picked a book that would be too young, and while Calisa was young she was a great character. I enjoyed the story through her eyes and her 16-year-old heart. She was resourceful, brave, and smart.

 The God of the Woods by Liz Moore

This is not my usual fantasy genre, but I saw it available in an audiobook and decided to give it a listen. Let me tell you. I listened to the audiobook and read the book. When I could not read, I would listen and vice versa. That's how sucked in I was. I had to know what happened next. 

There were a lot of moving parts along with timeline hopping. Different points of view. Each kept me guessing as to what truly occurred. I truly enjoyed the book, and it would make a great mini-series. 

Please note the trigger warnings below. I gave some examples, but this is not an exhaustive list of what happens. I also have a poor memory.

Trigger warnings:

Domestic abuse- neglect, once or twice, violence was described once(I skipped over that)

 Kidnapping- no details

Death of a child- description of what happens

Child abuse, neglect- Barbara's parents send her off to boarding school and really don't raise her. (No abuse at the school, no physical abuse mentioned. No sexual assault.)

Drug and alcohol abuse

Grief

Mental illness

Mentions of animal cruelty (living off the land and eating of animals), classism, and misogyny

Peasreads: The Dragon Wakes with Thunder

What an amazing conclusion to this duology!

Rounding up to 4 stars. I loved the first installment and the character development. This second installment was good but I started to dislike some of the characters. I found it hard to forgive them for past actions. I understand that no one is perfect, but there are deal breakers. Still the story was good. There was a lot to keep me interested. I loved how this duology ended. It was sad though to lose a character I liked 😭

I can't wait to have my hardcopy in hand to complete my collection.

Peasreads: A Forgery of Fate

 

Elizabeth Lim hits it out of the park with this latest book. I devoured it in two days and that's only because I had to adult and work. 

Talk about swoon worthy, C drama magic.  I liked all the characters, well exactly the actions of one but redeemed at the end. The human world and the immortal worlds were described beautifully. The characters from how they looked to their personalities.

Magical. Just as good as and maybe even a smidge better than the first book The God and the Gumiho. Seokga is ever the moody, trickster who has searched for Hani's reincarnate. When he finds her she not only doesn't remember him but she is almost the opposite of Hani. Watching Seokga fall in love with  Yoo Kisa for who she is was such a treat.  Sophie Kim is quickly becoming a must read author for me.

Peasreads: Goodnight Night Sweats A Parody for the Menopausal (and their Perimenopausal Friends)

 What a hilarious parody this is! For those of you who have been following Give Peas a Chance since my first lunch post in 2007 . For my oldest child who is now a full-on (young) adult by the way, yikes! Some of you were young mothers like I was and I loved learning from you all. Sharing lunches, recipes, and crafts, mostly on my Facebook page. We used to pack lunches in the morning and tuck our kids in at night and recite (because by the fifth time it was requested I know you memorized it) Goodnight Moon before kissing those babies. Now here we are. If you're anything like me your body is a vile betrayer and doing all sorts of wrong things, at the wrong times, for no reason at all. One of my favorite reads so far this year!

This story about a Korean diety (Seokga)

who has lost everything and is sent to the moral world to earn his powers and position back. His job is to catch demons that tried to help him take over as top god. He is on the hunt for a notorious gumiho. 

The Gumiho, Hani is a nine tailed fox. She is powerful, witty, smart, funny.  She inserts herself into the investigation to throw Seokga off her trail. 

These two characters are fun, snarky, smart, and determined. It's a battle between two strong characters both with everything to lose. Will they risk it all in the end? 

The flow of this book is a good steady one with some twists. In the end I was surprised. I cannot wait for the second installment.  If you like folklore, mythology, kitsune\gumiho, Asian stories read this book! I will definitely add this title to my personal library.
