Super Duper Publications - GIVEAWAY

Fun Decks come in sturdy tin boxes for travel and easy clean up!

Our wonderful friends at Super Duper Publications are helping parents get ready for summer with some great games. Bright colorful boxed games and fun decks that can go anywhere for on the go learning, that doesn't feel like learning! Here at Give Peas A Chance we've really come to love this company and their games, you can read past reviews, and see fun posts on what we do with our Super Duper Publications products through this link HERE. For 28 (!) years Super Duper Publications has been making hundreds of creative, colorful educational and therapy materials that you and your children will love.
I'm always excited for summer break, but as a mom I know that school is just around the corner and learning must continue so that children can retain and build on what they have already learned. I want to continue building on the foundation that my kids have without formally schooling them during the summer break.
While all of our Super Duper Publication's products and games have been wonderful. We all seem to gravitate towards the Fun Decks the most. They can be used and played with for a long as the children want, there's no need to play a game until the "end". Everyone can take turns answering questions, or reading cards.
Understanding Sentences comes with Super Duper's Secret Decoder, a fun way to check your answers!

Two Fun Decks I'd like to personally tell you about today are the Sentence Fill-In and the Understanding Sentences Fun Decks. Both of these decks come in a carrying tin that is sturdy and perfect for travel, and outings. The cards are a thick paper that feels glossy and almost laminated. If my kids got them a little dirty I could wipe them carefully with a towel.  They are great for all of our children, even our early reader who is 5. The Super Duper Secret Decoder in the Understanding Sentences deck is fun. The kids think it's so fun to check answers with the decoder. It has an easily replaceable battery, so that's a plus!

Both Fun Decks we played with came with easy to follow instructions that have game/play suggestions on them. But like I said you can even just read through the cards for fun!

The illustrations are colorful and fun. There are a variety of scenarios and people in all of Super Duper Publication's products. Boys, girls, women, children, elderly, all sorts of people. I love the diversity.
Read more about Super Duper Publication's picks below and get ready for FUN summer learning.

As the countdown to June begins, experts at Super Duper have handpicked six games for parents to consider for leisurely summertime learning. These boxed games and fun decks go anywhere -- sitting in a
restaurant, waiting at the airport or playing in the backyard with siblings.

Listed in alphabetical order, discover these educational card decks and games at Super
Duper's online store:

Grammar Chipper Chat • $64.95 • Grades K-5
Prepositions, future tense, subjective pronouns -- let the Syntax Safari begin! Using
animal picture cards, this exciting magnetic chip game explores 16 of the

(learning) is done, wave the magic wand for easy clean up.

expand vocabulary skills. First, you fill up the "candy jars" with "candy" (soft, foamy,
and colorful tokens). Then, players choose question cards from one of eight semantic
areas (or mix and match cards). Youngsters answer the questions, roll the die, and pick
"candy" from the jars. The player with the most "candy" at the end of the game wins. Sounds yummy!

Say and Glue for Language and Listening • $36.95 • Grades PreK-4
"Find the ladybug. Glue it on the ground." Early learners have a chance to be in cut-and-paste
heaven while they listen and learn six important language skills: categorizing, telling what

scissors and glue not included.

Sentence Fill-In Fun Deck • $29.95 • Grades 1+

stairs, wall, pipes or lights. Students look at 56 whimsical illustrations and finish
four sentences that describe the picture scenes with a noun, verb, adjective, or
adverb. Each of the cards teaches one part of speech. There are 18 noun cards, 10
adjective cards, 18 verb cards and 10 adverb cards. The cards with solid borders
have four sentences that are missing the same part of speech. Students complete each
of the sentences using one of the four words listed under the picture. Cards with checkered borders offer three answer
choices for each of the four sentences. Game ideas are included

Understanding Sentences Fun Deck • $24.95 • Grades K-6
Kids look at the illustrated card (child throwing a stick to a dog) and listen to or read
three sentences to find the one that describes the illustration (The dog is fetching a
stick; The dog buries the stick; or The cat fetches a stick). After mastering this set,
students move to Set Two where they read one sentence (The fish swims in the cool
pond) and search for the matching illustration from a choice of three pictures (duck
in a pond, fish in a fish tank, or fish in a pond). Students check their answers using the Super Duper Secret Decoder.

Super Duper Publications $50 GC GIVEAWAY

I was recently selected to review some products from Super Duper Publications. I had never heard of this company before. I posted a little about it on Facebook, and a friend on there said she used to use their games/products all the time when she was a speech therapist. After playing the games with my children, I can see why. Each of the games we received was unique, engaging, colorful, and interesting for all three of my children whose ages range from 5 to 9 years. Those of you with multiple children of different ages know that it's hard to find a game where everyone involved is interested. Sometimes you have one child that is bored, or one child that is frustrated because they aren't up to the skill level of the game.  Before I give you our review on each of the games we got to play, here is some information about Super Duper Publications from the company-
Super Duper Publications has been employing Speech-Language Pathologists to make language-enhancing learning materials for kids since 1986, so you know you’re getting the best tools out there when it comes to self-service learning for kids. No matter the skill that needs improving, you can browse their extensive website and online store, www.SuperDuperInc.com, and discover hundreds of enticing products created by language professionals. Each game or activity lists right on the website what skills it improves, so you’re sure to get the item that works on the specific skill you would be hoping to target with your child.

The first game I am going to tell you about is actually exactly what it says in the name. It is an Adventure Kit. There is so much to do and so many ways to use this kit. It can be overwhelming when you first open it up. There is a two-sided magnetic barrier that looks much like a table easel; at 12x16 inches on each side, it's a great size. It is made so that different colorful scenes can slide into both sides. The kit comes with two of each scene, which has pictures of space, a campsite, the ocean, and more. There are also 100 thick, nice magnet pieces, not flimsy. There's also a CD-ROM, 35 page reproducible activity book. Lots to do in this fun kit with a partner and even on your own! For this reason, I opened this game first. So we've used it the longest. I started out playing with my oldest child, 9, and my youngest. You would think that the age difference would be a challenge, but with this and the other games we received it was nice. My oldest was able to do the easier activities with my youngest, but she could also do more challenging activities with my middle child. All three are able to do individual age-appropriate activities and worksheets on their own. That's a wonderful thing to be able to set one child up and let them work on storytelling, categorizing items that belong on certain scenes that come with the game on their own. One of the games the girls have gone back to is probably the easiest. Two players place the same scene on the barrier; each player takes turn picking up a magnet and describing where they are placing the magnet. This is perfect for us because Pixie, my youngest, is working really REALLY :) hard on putting on her listening ears and waiting for instruction. This activity not only helps each child learn to listen and take direction, it also helps with placement words- right, left, on top, below, etc.
I hate calling this a game; it really is a teaching tool that is fun for kids. It would be great for any family that wants to make learning/reinforcing the skills below interesting and fun. It's also perfect for homeschooling and classrooms. The barrier can be used for so many other things, not only is the surface magnetic it's also a wipe board.
There is a "show me how" video for this game located HERE on the Super Duper site, it is worth watching. It's a great review and has tips on using this great kit.
This game helps with these skills
  • Following directions
  • Deductive reasoning
  • Giving directions
  • Vocabulary
  • Auditory memory
  • Storytelling
  • Basic concepts
  • Categorization
  • Rhyming
  • Listening

Super Duper Publications- Gift Guide and Coupon Discount Code

Super Duper Publications. I can't rave enough about this wonderful company and their educational, well made, super fun products. I have done a full review on this company, that's been making fun learning materials since 1986. You can read that review and check out a few more awesome toy reviews HERE on Give Peas a Chance. Today I wanted to share with you some great holiday picks of our OWN that are not just for a child who's struggling with language skills, but they are great for building strong language skills in all children. All of these games are fun for the whole family. I hope reading through my personal picks will help you find the perfect gift for the children in your life! All these picks are perfect for heartschooling fun! Learning through play.

My first pick for this gift guide!  I choose this product for several reasons-
My 7 year old is working on learning and recognizing more root (or stem) words, prefixes, and suffixes at school. It's important to me to help her review at home in a fun way.
This deck of five hundred cards has 2 words and a short definition for each of those words on it. That's a total of 1,000 words to be learned, read through, and studied! The beauty of breaking words down and learning different parts of them is that it helps children figure out the meaning of other words they have never seen or heard before. If you know that "demi" means half, then you can figure out what demigod and demitasse mean from that.Talk about word power for everyone! This may help adults with Words With Friends too. Not just for kids, I think this is a fun set for any logophile.
This deck is perfect to have out on the coffee table so that anyone can pull a few out at a time to read through.

HearBuilder Educational Software Collection Review

I have mentioned before how we are huge fans of Super Duper Publications, you can find them online here. My children have had so much fun learning with their products. My nine year old has even taken of the games to school to show her teachers, and they have asked her to bring them back to use in class! She even chose Super Duper's Tongue Ticklin' Twister pencils as Valentine's day gift for her classmates. Needless to say Super Duper Publications makes learning fun! It's what they do, and they are good at it. The HearBuilder collection from Super Duper Publications is no exception. After you've read our experiences with HearBuilder, scroll down for a link so you can check out all the FREE demos on their website, they really are great for kids!
What is HearBuilder?
HearBuilder to my children-
HearBuilder to my each of my children is a fun computer game. That may sound simple, but it needs to be fun. The different levels challenge each of my kids at their level. Ranging from ages 5 to 9, each of them have different levels of learning. HearBuilder helps with that learning. The thing is, to my children this is a game that they all want to play. So, while HearBuilder is a learning program that is effective, challenging, and meets Common Core State Standards, most importantly it's fun for kids. What good is a learning tool if it's not engaging and fun? What good is a learning tool if children aren't asking to use it, or aren't enjoying it? It wouldn't be any good.
HearBuilder to me-
In the world of apps and games, there are so many to choose from. I am so glad to have a game that is fun AND helps my children learn. Carefully designed games that are engaging and age appropriate for each of my children. Perfect for our Heartschooling needs.
Listening and really understanding is the foundation for all learning. If the foundation skills to listen to instruction are not present, a child simply can not easily learn what they are being taught.
I can choose the level of play that is appropriate for each of my children. Their progress can be monitored and I can even print out reports. Which helps me because I read and process better when I see something on paper and can make little notes on it.

HearBuilder, from the website-
( There's also a link here to a  90-second video introduction to what HearBuilder is and how it works.)
HearBuilder is a step-by-step learning program for PreK to eighth-grade students that provides systematic instruction in basic concepts, following directions, phonological awareness, sequencing, and auditory memory. Four award-winning software titles are available: HearBuilder Following Directions, Phonological Awareness, Sequencing, and Auditory Memory. HearBuilder gives students access to research-based, interactive programs by CD-ROM or online subscription. Students can use the software in the classroom, media center, computer lab, and at home. Each program offers multi-level activities with progress monitoring reports for educators and administrators to track individual student progress and to track usage and progress across grades, subgroups, or schools.
The HearBuilder Collection has both software (CD-ROM) editions and online subscriptions available. Each of the four programs can be purchased separately, in a complete set on CD-ROM, and there's even an option for a very reasonable online subscription price of $59 a year for families who do not need a physical CD

Here is our rundown of the four programs in this amazing collection.

Following Directions with Basic Concepts
From the first day of school, students must be able to follow directions in order to focus on their classroom activities, interact well with other children, and behave properly. HearBuilder Following Directions:
Develop essential listening skills as they learn 40 basic concepts.
Become Master Toy Makers while building Toy Central factories.
Learn to follow five different types of directions: Basic, Sequential, Quantitative/Spatial, Temporal, and Conditional.
My 5 year old is in her first year of public/outside of the home schooling. The transition from learning one on one with mom to a classroom of 24 and one teacher hasn't been easy. Learning to focus on teacher and listen to instruction without being distracted is something we've been working on. HearBuilder Following Directions let us start at a basic level to help with auditory and following directions. Children work on these skills and become Master Toy Makers while building their own Toy Central factories.  Learning in game form, with an end goal helps my five year old listen and follow the instructions. She is willing and eager to play the game (complete the sections) to become a Master Toy Maker. Throughout each of my children's sessions there are "bonus" games. These fun games give the kids a little break while learning. I love this feature!  I can see both my five year old and my seven year old a little more focused when given instruction. My children are listening for key words when given instructions, and completing those instructions. The memory training helps them remember what they have just heard. Making it less frustrating to complete tasks. They aren't masters at it yet, but  I feel there's improvement.

Phonological Awareness: Speech Sound Awareness for Reading
Before children can learn to read, they must be aware of the sounds that letters make in words, phrases, and sentences — or, to put it another way, they must have good phonological (sound) awareness skills. HearBuilder Phonological Awareness:
Practice nine activities to help them hear the sounds in words, syllables, and sentences.
Earn instruments and band members to form the rock band The Phonemix.
Move from basic activities (Sentence Segmentation, Syllable Blending, Syllable Segmentation) to more difficult ones (Rhyming, Phoneme Blending, Phoneme Segmentation/Identification) to the hardest tasks (Phoneme Deletion, Phoneme Addition, and Phoneme Manipulation).
As a pre reader, Pixie has been working on speech sounds. HearBuilders Phonological Awareness has been a great tool for her to work with. It's different than flash cards and paper homework that she brings home. She sees it as a fun break from homework. The sessions aren't long at all but I feel that they are so well programmed that she gets a lot out of them. This program is also great for my advanced reader, Phoneme Deletion, Phoneme Addition, and Phoneme Manipulation activities are challenging and fun.

Auditory Memory: Strategic Memory Training for ListeningNext, children must be able to remember and recall information they have learned. HearBuilder Auditory Memory:Practice memory strategies as they recall numbers, words, specific details, and multiple sentences.Embark on special missions with Recall Agents Kim and Joey to save Memory Town from Dr. Forgetsit.Learn memory strategies for answering WH questions.
HearBuilder Auditory Memory is a favorite, especially with my seven and nine year old. Just tonight, it's what my seven year old picked to work on. It could be because she loves robots and the bonus game is building a robot! But there's more to this program- punching in codes, remembering words, sentences, and stories was fun for each of the children. The comprehension skills building has helped my seven year old a lot. She has recently taken off with reading on her own. She's always read, and loves to do so. But now she's at that age where she's asking to stay up later, getting up earlier just to read. I find that she's able to process and understand what she's been reading more. Even on her homework instructions, she's able to comprehend more and more on her own. My nine year old gets so into the game that she's telling her sister's "be quiet, I'm trying to concentrate" which is good that she's so into the game. The great thing about certain levels on these HearBuilder games is that you can add background noise. This not only helps with focus, but it also helps with learning more gracious around here. My nine year old can learn to tune into the task at hand, even with background noise.

Sequencing: 2 to 6 Step SequencesFinally, students use all the information they learned in the first three HearBuilder programs to work on essential language and literary skills. HearBuilder Sequencing:Practice skills such as reading left to right, understanding details, predicting, and identifying important parts of stories.Go to the Sequencing Fun House, earn tokens to use in the Arcade, and become Sequencing Superstars.Put 120 illustrated scenes in order, starting with basic 2-step sequences and progressing to 6-steps.
For my girls who are readers and advanced readers, this program is quite fun. It helps them glean from what they have read. Important facts and details. What's minor and what's major to remember. The skills learned in this program not only help with homework comprehension, but make for more confident readers also!
Pixie, my youngest, has not done this program because I started her on the very basic level of HearingBuilder so that she could have a foundation to build upon.

Valentine's Day Gifts and Cards

WOW. Talk about waayy behind right? I still wanted to share the Valentine's that the kids gave to their friends this year.
Pixie handed out these little make your own Snowmen kits. It's funny, because I just happened to have these and the movie Frozen came out so Snowmen were perfect for an Olaf card. I had the pack of the Snowmen from Target's Christmas clearance. The pack of 20 was originally $5, and I got it for $1.25 I made the printable in black and white because I figured the kids could color it in if they wanted to.
Eldest gave out these great pencils that have tongue twisters on them from Super Duper Publications. I found the Ventricular- is that the word? Where the image changes when you move the item? These little stars "wink" when moved. Anyway. They were a steal; I found them at Target for 75% off at the Dollar Spot! There were maybe 12 in each bag too! She wrote on the back of each one.

Middle is BIG into robots and robotics right now, so these sticker packs from Target were PERFECT. She just opened up each one and wrote a message on them for each of her friends.
So those were our Valentine's this year. Simple but still fun, and NO candy!
