Another Double S Ranch book by Ruth Logan Herne. This one is called Home on the Range, in it we get to know more about Nick Stafford. Middle son to Sam Stafford. Nick is a single father trying to raise two little girls Cheyenne and Dakota. Along with the challenges of being a single father he has to deal with his past rejections, a father who was too busy on the ranch, and memories of a mother who walked out on him. Nick had always wanted to be a better man than his father in so many ways, but when his wife walks out on him he realizes that he is going down the same parenting path as Sam Stafford. Cheyenne is an 8 year old who is struggling to hold on to hope that her mother will return, she is defiant and angry at the world.
At the request of the principle Nick takes Cheyenne to Dr. Elsa Andreas, a family therapist who has left a successful practice to get away from the world. Elsa has her own demons to conquer, just like Nick. Between them they put the children first to help the girls heal, but as the past starts to catch up with them both Nick and Elsa need healing also.
I liked this book even better than Back in the Saddle. Elsa's character was strong and level headed despite what she's running from. Nick is a likable character, who is flawed but also trying to learn to be a better person and son. There is love and sacrifice in this book, it is a beautiful story about parenting, putting others before you, with a sweet romance. This is also a clean read, it is a Christian fiction book, but it is not evangelical. The characters have their own questions about God, faith in Him, but the book isn't "preachy".
