Have you heard of BIG Kids Magazine? This is a beautiful magazine. The print, the colors, the lay out, yes that's all beautiful. The content however is what makes this magazine for kids SHINE. There is artwork, stories and poetry from/by children. There are questions throughout the magazine that ask questions for kids to fill in the blanks, such as-
"The best thing in my life right now is..."
"If I had heaps of money I would..."
"And if I had more than I needed I would..."
There's artwork scattered throughout the magazine that says "colour me" or "complete this art work". Book reviews by kids, word games, craft projects- this magazine is chock full of activities that encourage children to interact, be creative, be daring in their creativity. I love that!
I can't wait to have my girls submit artwork, stores and poems to BIG for their magazine, it will be fun for them to do. There's also an option to just share and not have submissions published, obviously not all submissions can be published!
The stories have a glossary of key words with definitions. Perfect for new readers. There are stories about BIG people and their careers, lives, where they live- how they are creative, brave and generous.
BIG stands for Bravery, Imagination, Generosity. This magazine certainly promotes and encourages all of these! This is by far one of my favorite magazines I have seen for kids. Just plain fun that encourages my girls to use their imaginations and skills. No toy ads, tween idols or anything I need to screen. If anyone asked me to pick ONE magazine subscription for my girls this would be it. That is how awesome this magazine is.
Based out of Australia, BIG Kids magazine's creators Jo Pollitt and Lilly Blue donate a magazine to a child who may not have the opportunity to get a copy for every subscription sold.
Here is a little more about this BIG magazine straight from their siteBIG Kids Magazine is a contemporary arts publication for children. Driven by discovery, experimentation and response, we invite children to participate in topical conversations about art and the world. With a senior editor who is eight years old, BIG challenges hierarchies of who is listening and who is speaking to amplify small voices in BIG ways.
BIG is committed to partnering with organisations that support and enrich the lives of children and we will be working towards donating one magazine for every subscription sold, so that BIG is truly accessible to all children everywhere. (Read our BIG manifesto here, and how to partner with BIG here.)The magazine is a 60-page ethically produced biannual print publication that inspires creativity. It can be posted to anywhere in the world flying art from gallery walls and onto playroom floors. Every issue features a FREE artist print and two key projects: SIDE BY SIDE publishes artwork by children and artists side by side as our primary content and The Child Artist Response Project (CARP) is an initiative where children and artists respond directly to each other’s work.

Their blog is fantastic!
Because this magazine is based out of Australia, shipping is high. But, I truly think these would be awesome gifts. Plus, each subscription includes a donated copy to a child! I am hoping some big name book stores will start carrying it here the in the states, I want more of these!
