Four stars for this reimagining of the story of Isis. Malayna Evans has a PhD in Egyption history so her knowledge played a huge part in why I loved this book so much. Her story telling is engaging and interesting. I loved learning the tidbits about so many major and minor Gods. Reading how Isis learned at differnt stages of life to grow, rule, let go, survive, serve, restore, forgive, and to rebuild.

This Immortal Heart is a book about Aphrodite and Ares. Told through Aphrodite's POV. I like Jennifer Saint's writing and have enjoyed a few of her books. I've never been academic about how I write reviews. If I enjoyed the book, it was entertaining, it flowed well, the characters weren't annoying, and I finished it without wanting to put it down; that's a win for me. This book is a 4-5 star read. I love mythology and retellings. Did I LOVE Aphrodite? Not really. She was her, and her nature made her behave and think in certain ways. I liked that her character made sense. She's the goddess of love. She's strong and loves her followers. This is a story about her, Ares, her followers, Hephestus, and the politics of the Olympian Gods. Zeus is, of course, the universal A-hole.  There really is no way to spin that one to make him any different. Ares and Hephestus, I really liked. They were true to their nature. They both had a past that shaped them and put them on different paths. Which I suspect is all of us. 
Reading as Aphrodite weaved through life and the politics of Olympian court life while staying true to her core was interesting. The story flowed well. It is not a long read. Well paced.

Tesia Tsai has woven a story so beautifully that I read it in two days. A story about duty, honor, love, letting go, and holding on. Fighting for what you love and knowing when to let go is best. Siying is a priestess who is tasked with guiding the deceased to their resting places. She lives in a kingdom that is in the midst of war. She takes on a job to bring a soldier to his home across the border. The soldier turns out to be the missing crown prince. When she reanimates him, he comes to life. Though not completely, she soon finds out that he needs qi to actually stay alive. They set off on a journey to bring him home, gathering purified qi along the way.

I do hope @illumicrate it @fairyloot will do a special edition of this one I can't wait to have a copy on my bookshelves.

Peasreads: The Women of Artemis Hannah Lynn

 

I'm always a fan of Hannah Lynn's writing. This was a great story. It was hard to read in some parts due to the domestic violence, sexual assault (Nothing described). It was also so sad that so many of the women were in these relationships. I think Hannah did a good job with how she wrote about the abuse and how each character dealt with it. I truly enjoyed this book.

Peasreads- Persephone's Curse by Katrina Leno

Magical realism reads about four sisters that is reminiscent of Little Women. I've never had sisters, but I imagine this is what it must be like, or maybe I hope it must be like. Built in friendships, love, disagreements, mistakes, forgiveness, and a bond like no other. The Farthing sisters have always been told that they are descendants of Persephone herself. Could it be true? Each Farthing sister has a unique talent, not really magic, that is called upon. They do have a ghost that lives in their attic, who happens to be a dear friend. Henry. Henry has always been a part of their lives. No one else can see Henry, still, he has grown up with them and loved them. All is well until Henry and one of the sisters fall in love. The story is told from Winnie's point of view; she is the third-oldest sister. 

Fast-paced, this story moves along, and I kept turning the page to see what happens next. Very entertaining.  This was a quick read; it is categorized as a middle-grade read for 8-12-year-olds.  It has language (the F word), and the sisters are ages 14 to 18. I thought it was YA.

Peasreads- Aphrodite by Phoenicia Rogerson

 Oh this book was so fun to read! I'm laughing, clutching my pearls, and hungry for more.  What a great take on on the Greek Gods and Aphrodite's story.  I loved the writing style, and the "footnotes" from Aphrodite herself were hilarious.  This is the first book I have read  by Phoenicia Rogerson, but it won't be the last.

Peasreads: Selkie by Nataly Gruender

More Selkie books please! I like Selkie lore and this one is from the author of Medusa which I really enjoyed (so good!). This wasn't as good o ONLY because it was a little rushed in the end and I didn't want it to end! From the start I if course was angry for Quinn, I saw red when she was held against her will. I understood her feelings towards those adults around her. It made me sad. Reading her journey was so so good though. This didn't end like I thought it might, I'm sad about that but also happy with how it ended for some of the characters. Not happy for others. It was a quick read. I started it yesterday. Finished it today.

Peasreads: A Forgery of Fate

 

Elizabeth Lim hits it out of the park with this latest book. I devoured it in two days and that's only because I had to adult and work. 

Talk about swoon worthy, C drama magic.  I liked all the characters, well exactly the actions of one but redeemed at the end. The human world and the immortal worlds were described beautifully. The characters from how they looked to their personalities.

Magical. Just as good as and maybe even a smidge better than the first book The God and the Gumiho. Seokga is ever the moody, trickster who has searched for Hani's reincarnate. When he finds her she not only doesn't remember him but she is almost the opposite of Hani. Watching Seokga fall in love with  Yoo Kisa for who she is was such a treat.  Sophie Kim is quickly becoming a must read author for me.

In Goddess of the River, Patel  tells us a story about Ganga the River Goddess. This book is from her point of view. From how she came to Earth, the curse put upon her, her love and for humans, her understanding of them. 

Ganga has a son with a human king. She watches as he grows from afar, trying to steer him from the evil parts of humanity. As time goes by both Ganga and her son grow in different ways. Her son navigates the politics, family distrust and betrayal. While Ganga attempts steer the hearts of people and to assist them as they come to her shores and cry out to her. 

This is a book that has beautiful word building and story telling. I loved it so much that I have put another book by the author on my TBR

Peasreads: Daughters of Olympus by Hannah Lynn

 

Retelling of mythology is one of my favorite genres right now and Hannah Lynn writes them so well. This one is about Demeter and her daughter Core, later Persephone. It's a story about living, learning, yielding, a mother's love, a daughter's faithfulness, and the events that shape us. 

The story is written around and built up around what we've been told about Demeter, Core, Hades, and Zeus. It creates such a lush rounded story that is a page-turner.

I would read this again. It's one of my favorites from Hannah.

Dragonfruit

Dragonfruit is a Pacific Island mythology inspired tale. It has dragons, pirates, magic, and mystery. I absolutely enjoyed reading this story. The description says romance, it has a little romance which to me was not the focus and that made it great. It is so much more. This is such a great story about family, friendship, belonging, forgiveness, and strength.

The main characters were likeable. I wanted them to succeed.  The word building beautiful and lush 

It is a clean read. Great for YA and Teens also.

A Spartan's Sorrow (The Grecian Women Trilogy, #2) 

My thoughts:

This retelling of the life of Clytemnestra and later in the book her son, Orestes. The focus is on Queen Clytemnestra's life during the Trojan War. The King, Agamemnon, her husband is away with many of the men in the kingdom. Many await the return of their loved ones, and Clytemnestra hopes the King never returns. Agamemnon does the unthinkable and sacrifices their oldest daughter to a goddess. Clytemnestra is determined to keep her remaining children safe. 

This is a story about a mother's love, revenge, and obligation. I am a fan of Hannah Lynn and this subgenre. This is a great retelling. There is depth and complexity to the characters. If you liked Circe you'll love A Spartan's Sorrow.

One of my favorite reads so far this year!

This story about a Korean diety (Seokga)

who has lost everything and is sent to the moral world to earn his powers and position back. His job is to catch demons that tried to help him take over as top god. He is on the hunt for a notorious gumiho. 

The Gumiho, Hani is a nine tailed fox. She is powerful, witty, smart, funny.  She inserts herself into the investigation to throw Seokga off her trail. 

These two characters are fun, snarky, smart, and determined. It's a battle between two strong characters both with everything to lose. Will they risk it all in the end? 

The flow of this book is a good steady one with some twists. In the end I was surprised. I cannot wait for the second installment.  If you like folklore, mythology, kitsune\gumiho, Asian stories read this book! I will definitely add this title to my personal library.

Peasreads: Queens of Themiscyra by Hannah Lynn

Oh gosh this book. It made me so angry, sad, and hopeful throughout. What can we expect when it comes to Greek Mythology right? Women generally never win. However reading Hannah Lynn's take on Hippolyte's life in Themyiscryra as Queen, then her life away from her people, and her family as she navigates life as a married woman. So many feelings.

This is a retelling that is thrilling, heartbreaking, and written so well. I would recommend it to anyone who likes mythology, love, sisterhood, family, and retellings with strong female characters.

Peasread: Dark Star Burning, Ash Falls White (Song of The Last Kingdom, Book 2)

The Song of The Last Kingdom books have been some of my favorites to read this year. If you've read my review for Song of Silver, Flame Like Night you already know what the author Amelie Wen Zhao's writing style is. It is poetic, and lush, and brings to mind the landscapes of the Last Kingdom beautifully. Storytelling that will have glued to your seat and not wanting to stop until you've reached the end. Even then, you'll want more.

This book starts off from where we last left Zen and Lan. They have gone their separate ways. They have the same goal. Eradicate the colonizers and restore their people. While they both want the same thing, both believe in different methods of achieving their goals. Lan refuses to use the power of the Silver Dragon bound to her believing that the Demon God and its counterparts bring nothing but death and destruction. Zen believes the only way to rid the land of the Elantions is to use the power of the Demon Gods. He has made a deal with the one who dwells within him. One that will cost not only his body and mind but in the end, his soul.

Thank you Juliet Marillier for writing another Sevenwaters book that I really liked! Okay, I've liked most all of them, but some I liked a little less, and some a little more. Seer of Sevenwaters, I liked a little more. It is about another of Lord Sean and Lady Aisling's daughters, Sibeal. Sibeal is a young seer who has known her path since she was younger. She is called to join the Druids. Before she takes her final vow does she visits Clodagh and her other family on the Island of Inis Eala. This island is where Johnny trains his elite warriors. While Sibeal is on the island there is a shipwreck. Three mysterious survivors are found. Knut, a warrior who everyone on the island likes and makes friends with. His wife, Svala, who is strange in her behavior and she does not speak.

Peasread: Heir To Sevenwaters

I can't help but finish the books in this Sevenwaters series. I am actually done and have been but writing out a review it just takes more effort. This fourth installment by Juliet Marillier was pretty good. I liked it, I will say none of them have compared to Daughter of the Forest. Still I feel that the  fantasy aspect is back, it was not as prevalent in the last book. There was magic of course, as Fianne had magic powers. This is just a different, other world setting that I liked.

Continuing the Sevenwaters Trilogy/Series with Child of the Prophecy. A return to Sevenwaters through the eyes of a new female character, Fianne. Fianne is the daughter of Ciaran and Niamh, her heritage is both of the Sevenwaters clan and the dark sorceress Lady Oonagh. She was raised in a small village away from Sevenwaters by her father who trains and teaches her magic and druid lore. Fianne is very different from Sorcha of Daughter of the Forest and Laidan of Son of the Shadows. She's more conflicted in many ways.
